For a lot of pilots losing their medical could mean losing their job.
You can lose your medical for a variety of reasons. Some are out of your control to a certain extent like car and sporting accidents.
Other reasons are completely in your control: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, substance abuse, and to a certain extent depression.
Pilots lose their medicals because they eat the wrong foods.
You can get keep your medical forever by doing this one thing:
Completely change the way you eat.
You can eat your way out of health problems.
This article is intended as a wake up call to those who pilots who don’t think twice about what they put into their body.
Notice I didn’t say exercise? Exercise is cool and I highly recommend if for a million reasons, but exercise by itself won’t get you your medical back.
Food is the most powerful drug in the world.
Exercise is 20% of the battle and Nutrition is a whopping 80% of the battle.
You can lose 30 pounds and keep it off without exercising, but try exercise without changing your nutrition and you won’t sustain it.

I know you have been inundated with a million bits and pieces of advice. I get it. I really do. I have read so many books and articles and tried so many different “diets.” I have been around long enough to go through the “low-fat” and “low-calorie” fad back to the “fat is good.”
What the hell are you supposed to eat? Honestly, I have no idea what you should eat.
You have to educate yourself and find out what works for YOU.
You also must learn what doesn’t work for anyone: sugar, grains (especially whole wheat), alcohol, processed foods, pesticides, feed-lot beef, low-calorie and low-fat diets.
Before I get into my list of recommendations, let me ask you some questions:
- Do you think eating fatty foods will make you fat?
- Do you think you have to got on a low-calorie diet to lose weight?
- Do you think whole wheat is “healthy”?
- Do you think eating foods high in cholesterol will give you high cholesterol?
If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, don’t feel bad. There is a lot of outdated information floating around.
I want you to start with this book. It is backed up by a ton of scientific papers and real world results.
It Starts with Food: This book is intended to teach you what its like to feel amazing. It is the ultimate personal experiment.
The basic premise is to clean out your system, get you feeling amazing, then reintroduce foods to see how YOU react to each food.
It is not a long-term diet, although you certainly could keep it up if you wanted. It is a 30 day shock to the system with a reintroduction period. You need to figure out what foods your body hates.
Just be prepared if your body says: “I hate beer, bread and anything dairy.”
Check out these testimonials I look from the Whole30 website. You can find more examples and a complete list of diseases this program alleviates at this link.

Last ditch effort:
If you are seriously about to lose your medical and your job I propose you eat like you have cancer. Click here to get a pdf of a complete anti-inflammatory diet.
You can choose to but the product or not. That’s not why I provided you the document. I use the product, but I used it under the supervision of my Naturopath Doctor.
The most important part of the document is the second page where it describes what you can and can’t eat.
I lost 2 inches around my waist and 6 pounds in 30 days without exercising on this short-term program. My joints also felt like a 13 year old’s again.
A full anti-inflammatory is not for the faint of heart. It was really really hard to do. It is also not a long-term diet, although if I got cancer I would eat this way to give my body a fighting chance.
I did it so I could figure out what foods give me problems.
Whether you like it or not your body reacts to foods. A food will either give your body no reaction, or it will attack the food and create inflammation. Inflammation is the root of a lot of diseases.
Your body changes over time. While you may have been able to eat certain foods while you were young, that may not be the case now.
It’s your job to figure out what your body hates. It’s also your job to heal your gut. If you keep introducing inflammation-causing foods, you will never get better.
I recommend you get a food allergy test prior to taking on an anti-inflammatory diet. Get your blood drawn and tested.
Ideally you would go to a Naturopath Doctor for this test, as your regular doctor will probably look at you cross-eyed if you suggest food may be making you sick.
Yup, I am not a medical doctor. So, obviously these aren’t medical recommendations. These books are just suggestions. You are responsible for yourself.
Actually, I don’t want you to listen to me at all, and I certainly don’t want you to listen to any doctors.
I want you to listen to your own body.
Try eating a pound of vegetables a day, cut out all grains, alcohol and sugar for 30 days.
Then tell me how you feel.

My opinion is not for sale. I never recommend books I haven’t read and value.
I hope it made some people think.
I love talking about food and what it does to your body.
